Compress a photo

Free and private. Your photo is made smaller right here in your browser and never uploaded.

To compress a photo, choose it below, pick the longest side and a quality, tap Compress, then download the smaller JPG. A longest side of 2048 pixels and quality 75 usually makes a phone photo much smaller while it still looks sharp on screens. Nothing is uploaded.

How to reduce the size of a photo

  1. Choose your photo

Tap Choose a photo, or drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC file onto the box above.

  2. Pick size and quality

A smaller longest side and a lower quality both make the file smaller. Start with 2048 pixels and 75.

  3. Compress and download

Tap Compress, check the new size, then Download.

What makes a photo file large?

Two things: the number of pixels and how much detail is kept. A recent iPhone photo has 12 to 48 million pixels, far more than a screen shows. Reducing the longest side to 2048 pixels keeps it sharp on phones and laptops while cutting most of the data.

Quality controls the JPEG compression. Between about 70 and 85 the difference is hard to see, but the file gets much smaller.

On iPhone

Since iOS 26, the Preview app on iPhone can export an image to reduce its file size. Formatly converts whole albums with the quality you choose, so you can make many photos smaller at once, all on your iPhone.

Questions and answers

Is this photo compressor free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and compresses one photo at a time.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is compressed in your browser on your own device. It is never sent to a server.
Will the compressed photo look worse?
At quality 75 and above most people cannot see a difference on a screen. For printing, keep a larger size and a higher quality.
Why is my photo not smaller?
If a photo is already small or heavily compressed, there is little left to save. Try a smaller longest side or a lower quality.
