How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone

Updated 5 November 2026

To get JPG instead of HEIC on iPhone, open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible: new photos are saved as JPEG. For photos you already have, convert them with an app like Formatly, or convert one photo at a time with the free converter on this website.

Change the camera format for new photos

iPhone saves photos as HEIC when the camera format is High Efficiency. Switch it to Most Compatible and new photos are saved as JPEG instead.

  1. Open Settings and tap Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Choose Most Compatible.

This only changes new photos. Photos already in your library stay HEIC, and JPEG photos take more storage space.

Share photos in a compatible format

When you share with AirDrop, Messages or email, iPhone might automatically send a more compatible format, such as JPEG, if the receiving device does not support HEIC. Apple says it might, so it is not guaranteed.

Import photos to a computer

When you import photos to a computer, iPhone can convert them to JPEG during the import. If your photos still arrive as HEIC, open Settings, tap Apps, then Photos: when Keep Originals is chosen, photos are not converted.

Convert photos you already have

For photos already in your library, use a converter. Formatly converts single photos or whole albums to JPG on your iPhone, without uploading them. To convert one photo on a computer, use the free HEIC to JPG converter on this website.

Questions and answers

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a little detail can be lost. Saved at high quality, the difference is very hard to see.
Will Most Compatible convert my old photos?
No. It only changes how new photos are saved. Photos you already took stay HEIC until you convert them.
Why does my iPhone take HEIC photos?
HEIC saves space. Apple says HEIF, the format behind HEIC, offers better compression than JPEG while keeping the same visual quality.
